You are embarking on a sojourn
into your life with the intention of
identifying those moments that
are significant to you and
gathering them into a conscious
form of meditation. This is an
ongoing process. By gathering
these personal moments and
reflecting upon them, you are
forming your own unique
prayer practice.
To begin, I would invite you to
settle into the center of yourself.
As you breathe in and out,
remember that one of the words
for Spirit in Aramaic is breath.
Imagine yourself breathing
the Spirit. As you enter into
this exercise, envision yourself
creating space within where
the Holy One can enter.

There are many different ways
to reach a place of quiet reflection.
These Include but are not limited to:
  • Meditation or Prayer
  • Physical Exercise such as:
    • Walking
    • Yoga
    • Qi Qong
    • Dancing
    • Swimming
    • Running
    • Horseback Riding
  • Gardening, Cutting Grass,
    Raking Leaves
  • Receiving a Massage or Reiki
  • Lying Down and
    Closing Your Eyes
  • Sitting by a Fire
  • Listening To or Playing Music
  • Journaling, Painting, Drawing
  • Day Dreaming, Soaking in a Tub
  • Cooking, Cleaning,
    Doing Laundry
Whatever method you choose,
the focus is to reflect upon the
moments in your life which make
you aware that there is Someone
or Something present beyond
understanding. The force or presence
may manifest in different ways.
You may see an image, hear a sound,
feel a sensation in your body,
have a profound thought which
clicks into place like magic.
You might experience something
that could be described as mere
coincidence yet, you sense there
is more. A sense of well being,
deep peace, or profound pleasure
is often part of the experience.
Sometimes it might be accompanied
by stark fear or extreme sorrow.
In addition to reviewing your past,
I invite you to begin to notice
these moments in the present.

Think over the relationships in your life
which take you beyond yourself.
Gather these. You may also
experience activities that transport
you beyond the normal boundaries.
Gather these. Tap into those places
in your life that carry a hint of more,
a sense of magic, an "aha",
or an ahhhh. Moments of wonder,
moments of insight, moments of passion, moments of wildness
and freedom, moments of pure bliss
are all elements of your personal
mysteries. I like to refer to them
as "extranatural" moments. Begin to
gather these moments. Relive them
in as much detail as you can.
You might want to write them down
or draw them. You might want to
share them with a loved one,
your spiritual director or therapist.
As you gather these moments, envision
yourself gathering them into a string of beads.
The next step in this exercise will be to create
a string of beads that will serve as a physical
reminder of these holy moments of your life.
Begin to think about how you would like
each moment to be represented on your
string of beads or necklace…think of color,
size, material, etc. While part of me would
have made every one a diamond, it is fun
to come up with colors, shapes, and textures
to represent each unique moment.
